The group we have is a lot of fun and I don’t think that I have laughed this much since last July – oh my Charlotte family how I miss you! We are having the time of our lives! We left our wonderful guide at Naples and set off for Roma! One of the students is a very talented singer and often plays the guitar around the villa for us, I attend all her concerts! She was writing in her journal on the train and I asked her to write me a song, but she asked if I would be okay with a poem… really?!?!? Of course!
We arrived in Roma to another amazing hotel, this one complete with a private changing room, Silvia is really spoiling us this semester! We decided to grab a quick drink at the bar on the 9th floor that outlooks the city, as soon as we exited the elevator we found a group of students, so we happily joined them for a drink. After a good nights sleep and a delicious breakfast, we were off to The Colosseum! It is still unreal to me the size of this structure and that every brick and the mortar in between was made and laid by hand! I found a book in the library while cleaning it that overlaid drawings of old Rome over new picture, thus has been a wonderful guide as it also gives me fun facts. While Giudi is an even better guide, sometimes my attention span doesn’t keep up and referencing this book is more my style!
We could not have asked for a better day, as since we departed for our week long trip it has rained every day!
After our visit to The Colleseum we set off next door to The Forum Romanum. I really just walk around this place in awe to think that Ancient Romans built and walked these lands and that this city was build upon and just uncovered in 1945.
I was excited as Nick was able to walk around with me this time, last time we were here I had to plop him down somewhere to sketch. We climbed The Palatine hill, this is what represents Rome’s sacred birthplace. The view over Rome and The Vatican from here were amazing!
The last stop of the day before a “family” dinner at the old Peroni brewery (thanks for the suggestion Kelly Moore) was The Pantheon. These places are just unreal to me and I can’t fathom that that long ago Romans had the means to build a structure this massive and beautiful. I could sit in here for days just staring!
